Derrick In San Juan Puerto Rico

I grew up in the Baraboo Hills of Wisconsin, watching weather move over bluffs and valleys, and light shift with the seasons. I began photographing those moments with my dad’s Minolta film camera in the late 1970s and never really stopped.

Years spent working in regional tourism and outdoor interpretation kept me closely tied to this landscape and to the people drawn here. Seeing the land through their eyes—curious, sometimes disoriented, often searching for something quieter and more lasting—shaped how I approach photography.

Travel across the country and abroad has given me perspective, but I always return to the Driftless. The weather, the light, and the land here change daily. My work comes from paying attention to those shifts and trying to hold onto the experience of a moment—not always the way it looked, but the way it felt.
